* The traditional count of 83 quartets has been revised by the collected edition Joseph Haydn: Werke, which removes Opus 1 №5 (Symphony ‘A’, Hob. I:107), Opus 2 №3 and №5 (sextets, Hob. II:21–22), the six quartets of Opus 3 (spurious — probably by Romanus Hoffstetter, 1742–1815), and the individual movements of Haydn’s arrangement of The Seven Last Words. Opus 1 №0 (‘Opus 0’), rescued from Hob. II:6, is included here although absent from Peters. The early quartets were written for Baron Fürnberg; their dates are uncertain. Opus 103 was left unfinished, surviving as only two movements.
